A Distinctive Outdoor Sports Mall for Shenzhen’s Growing Urban Hub

Shenzhen Vanke Longgang Sports Mountain introduces a unique sports-focused retail and leisure destination in Longgang, Shenzhen. Located along Longgang Avenue and facing Longcheng Plaza, the project spans a 19,000 sqm site with approximately 28,000 sqm of above-ground retail and 7,500 sqm underground. Surrounded by residential areas and next to Tianyu Experimental School, the complex leverages its position within Shenzhen’s eastern development axis to deliver an innovative combination of sports, shopping, and social experiences, anchored by three landmark sports zones across its multi-level terraces.

Context and Urban Integration

Positioned within the Longgang district, a planned sub-centre in Shenzhen’s urban strategy, Sports Mountain benefits from excellent transport connections and a dense surrounding residential population. The development responds to the area’s rapid growth by providing a new typology: an outdoor sports mall that diverges from the conventional enclosed shopping centre or outdoor retail street.

Design Strategy

The elongated 300-metre site presented key challenges, including its narrow north-south profile and east-west circulation demands. CLOU architects addressed this by concentrating most of the gross floor area on the eastern, wider portion of the plot, forming an efficient, centralised interior flow. The building’s massing is clear and inviting, guiding visitors vertically through a stepped, terraced design that faces north, towards the city and mountain backdrop.

Programme and Key Attractions

The programme mixes creative retail, sports retail, indoor sports, outdoor sports, and social spaces across multiple levels. Highlights include an adult and kids’ climbing zone, a rooftop running track, basketball courts, outdoor gym, and a dedicated sports centre. The terraces integrate F&B, retail, and social nodes, creating a lively atmosphere at all times of the day. Three main sports anchors—climbing wall, running track, and sports hub—serve as iconic landmarks, animating the vertical circulation and enhancing visual connectivity across the site.

A New District Landmark

With its distinctive sports-themed programming and terraced landscape, Sports Mountain establishes itself as a landmark within Shenzhen’s eastern development axis. The design invites community engagement, supports an active lifestyle, and offers a fresh commercial typology that stands out among the city’s growing number of retail destinations.
