The New Middle Street

Shenyang plays a key role in China’s industrialisation process. It is also here where the ‘Zhong Street’, China’s first true outdoor retail street dating back to the late Qing dynasty, set standards for open air shopping with its renovation in 1997.

The Huanyu mall is a sustainable revitalisation project that uses an existing concrete frame abandoned several years ago as a base for new construction. With selected iconic features of Zhong Street converted into a contemporary language, the mall’s upper levels are conceived as outdoor spaces. Exclusive external circulation ensures direct access to this rooftop retail street, with ample shopfront exposure for retail along the way. Footfall on the top floors converts them from underused spaces to new ‘ground floors’.

Referencing the city’s industrial heritage, brick facades are complemented by metal and glass elements, to create a sociable urban retail atmosphere that is typically Shenyang.
